Something I'm Reading:
Reading Spark Joy by Marie Kondo. Great book on implementing the whole “Marie Kondo” method of cleaning and organizing. Really great book. Below is a particularly good passage from it:
Something I Teach:
The importance of having an org chart for your business. Even if you’re a solopreneur right now, knowing the structure of “roles” in your business is one of the most important steps you can take to prepare to scale. The key, though, is not to put names, but roles, and keeping them defined and separate, even if you’re doing multiple roles in your business. For example, you likely have a CEO at the top, and then maybe a COO below that person. Below that you may have a VP of Acquisitions, VP of Finance, VP of “Something Else” and below them there are likely also more roles. Now, once your perfect company is defined, with each role having a clear definition, you can start finding people to fill those roles who are the perfect fit. But how will you know if someone is a perfect fit if you haven’t done this work?
Something I Photographed:
Each week I share a photo I snapped in the previous week. Sometimes serious. Sometimes random and funny. Maybe a selfie once in a while. Just because.
Did some touristy stuff with the wife lately, including some Zip Lining!
(Tip: if you live in a touristy area, or near any major city, it’s easy to spend years without doing the tourist stuff. But why? Don’t grow complacent! Get out there and experience your area with your family!)
Something I'm Excited About:
I’m looking to buy an airstream trailer on the west coast somewhere for an upcoming road trip with the family! (Know of one for sale? Let me know in this short form and I’ll forever thank you 😉)
Something I Can Answer:
Each week, I'll be answering one question from someone on my BehindTheBeard textletter! Want your question answered? Submit it by simply replying to this text!
Question: “How do you balance hustling hard while also enjoying life while you’re still young?”
The truth is there are 168 hours of time in a given week. We sleep maybe 60 hours and your day job is 40 hours a week. There is still a lot of time. The thing is most of us (and especially young people) are spending 4-5 hrs a day (20-30 hours a week) on their phone. So how do you balance that? You just now that you have to make sacrifices. But I don’t sacrifice the hustle or the fun. I sacrifice the lazy things - like the video games, Netflix, TikTok etc. You can spend 40hrs a week on your day job, 60 hrs a week sleeping, 20 hours a week having fun with friends/family, and 20 hours a week on your side hustle, that’s still a pretty balanced life (with plenty of time left over)!
I also know there are things you don’t get back when your young - like time with your kids, your fitness/health, or time with your friends. I don’t sacrifice those things and keep them in mind when prioritizing what I want to do in my free time. You’d be surprised how much time you really have when you look into where you’re spending your time now.
Your Friend,
