Something I'm Reading:
I got an advanced copy of Tim Grover's new book Winning: The Unforgiving Race to Greatness (we are interviewing him on the show!). He's famous for being Michael Jordan's trainer (as well as Kobe Bryant and many others). It's really good - I'd recommend it when it comes out in a couple weeks!
Something I've Learned:
This week, I took my team at Open Door Capital to play paintball. It was awesome (my first time) but I realized…I'm not 20 anymore. I could barely walk the next day from all the jumping, running, crouching, bending, and crawling. Great team-building activity…not so great on the back!
Something I've Purchased:
I bought a condo! 🙂 It’s a 2-bedroom, 2 bath condo in Kihei, Hawaii. Once it’s rehabbed, I’m going to be using it to test out a new idea called AMonthInMaui.com where people can book a month here (no more, no less) - with a car and some activities included. I’m trying to capitalize on the whole shift in the world's economy of "I can work anywhere. " So... why not work in Maui? Anyway, I have a month or two of rehab ahead before I can book it out, but if anyone is interested, check out the temporary website above!
Something I Photographed:
Each week I share a photo I snapped in the previous week. Sometimes serious. Sometimes random and funny. Maybe a selfie once in a while. Just because.
Here’s a pic from paintball which I mentioned above. Great team outing with a few battle scars (and a sore back) to show for it.
Something I'm Excited About:
My wife is taking 100% charge of coordinating the rehab of that condo. So I'm excited to see her jump back in - it's been a few years since she's been super active in the real estate stuff (#kids!) but she's already crushing it!
Something I Can Answer
Each week, I'll be answering one question from someone on my BehindTheBeard Text List! Want your question answered? Submit it by simply replying to this text!
Question: Is it a bad idea to partner on your very first deal?
The short answer is no - it's not a bad idea at all to partner on your first real estate deal. Partnerships are great and one of my favorite ways to invest in real estate. The question that I would ask anybody is why are you partnering?
Are you partnering because of fear? Are you partnering because you actually need something? Ask yourself why you are partnering and make sure that your partner fulfills whatever that need is. If it's out of fear, that's fine. Get a partner to help overcome the fear, but make sure that you won't both be fearful and stuck taking no action. If you need money, make sure you partner with someone who can bring the money. You don't have time? Make sure the partner actually has the time. You get the idea! Most importantly, spell everything out in a partnership agreement. The more that you set expectations up front, the less drama you're going to have on the back end.
