Something I'm Reading:
I’m reading the third book in the Red Rising Series called Morning Star by Pierce Brown. If you’ve been following “Behind the Beard” for some time then you know I read the first two books of the series and loved them. They’re a good break from nonfiction!
Something I've Learned:
I learned that when you live on an island, you should always check that there’s enough paint to complete the project . So funny story. We hired a contractor to repaint the entire deck of our pool area at our house. They ran out of paint and there wasn’t anymore on the island. So while we were in Dallas, Ryan Murdock had to go track down 5 more gallons of the same paint and ship it back to Maui at $100 per gallon. Lesson learned!
Something I've Purchased:
Heather bought me a reMarkable 2. It’s a “paper tablet” (as they call it) that uses the same technology as a Kindle and has a paper-like feel. I can take notes by hand and it transfers to my computer. I love it!
Something I Photographed:
Each week I share a photo I snapped in the previous week. Sometimes serious. Sometimes random and funny. Maybe a selfie once in a while. Just because.
This picture shows the net daily population gain and loss from several different DMAs. It’s a great visualization of where people are leaving from and moving to. This was from a presentation that Brian Burke gave at Michael Blank’s Deal Maker Live event that I recently spoke at. It was a phenomenal speech he gave on how to invest is a post COVID world. I’m gonna try to get Brian to record the same speech for the BiggerPocket’s YouTube channel.
Something I'm Excited About:
In the next few days, we are going to be launching our next apartment opportunity! It’s a portfolio of 3 multifamily properties in Vail Valley, Colorado. There’s some exciting things about this offering, so if you’re an accredited investor, stay tuned!
P.S. We typically launch new opportunities to our existing investors and those on our waiting list before bringing it to the general public. And given the strength of this deal, we expect it to be fully subscribed before it even hits my Instagram. If you want early access, join our current waiting list here to have a chance to invest!
Each week, I'll be answering one question from someone on my BehindTheBeard Text List! Want your question answered? Submit it by simply replying to this text!
Question: “How do you balance being a nice and likeable guy with being firm and assertive in business?” - DJ
It’s always a struggle because on the DISC profile, I am a high “I” which means I like to be liked. So I set up other people to be the bad guy. Internally, the “system” is the bad guy so I don’t have to hold people accountable or correct people. The system itself (we use the EOS model from the book Traction by Gino Wickman) holds people accountable and does that job for me. Externally, I use other people who are much better at confrontation than I am. For example, Ryan Murdock 🙂
