Something I'm Reading:
Re-reading "The Untethered Soul" by Michael Singer - this time with a pen in hand. Such a deeply profound book about the nature of "who am I?" Sounds kinda foo-foo, but it’s really more "grounded" that it seems on the surface. It made an impact on me the first time I read it and is making an impact again this time. Highly recommended!
Something I Teach:
To expand on some of the stuff in "The Untethered Soul", I'll explain one (of many) points in the book. The author talks about how most of what goes into our eyes/ears simply "passes through." The color of trees, the advertisement on the billboard, the sunset we watch. We notice, but it just goes in and then out. But some stuff gets "stuck." We dwell on these things and they start to drive us crazy. We think of the way someone hurt us in the past, how something at work isn't going quite right, or some cringy moment from our past. And that "blockage" affects our mood. But most of the time, there is nothing we can do about it. It just makes us feel like crap, despite being of no real use. So instead, the book suggests practicing the act of "releasing" those thoughts and visualizing them "passing through you" . This can immediately relieve the negative emotions caused by that blockage. I'm not great at this, but when I do it, it definitely works. Give it a try!
Something Cool I Own:
Today I'll share with you two fun but mostly useless apps that give me a ton of joy:
1.) Reface. This allows you to deep-fake anyone's face onto famous movie scenes. It's hilarious.
2.) Face App. This allows you to make anyone look super old, super young, change their hair color, make them the opposite gender (yep), and a million other things. It's crazy real looking.
Something I Photographed:
Each week I share a photo I snapped in the previous week. Sometimes serious. Sometimes random and funny. Maybe a selfie once in a while. Just because.
Okay this is something a friend of mine videoed…but that still counts right? 😆 This is a quick recap video of August’s Maui Masterclass! This is a monthly event we do where 30 high level real estate investors are invited out to Maui to network and talk through how to be better investors, business owners, and people. The August one just wrapped up and it was awesomeee! The next Masterclass is September 22-25 and there are still a few spots available. This isn’t for everyone so if you want to learn more and apply, check it out here.
Something I'm Excited About:
In the next week or two, I will officially be launching my passion project “BeardyBrew Coffee”. But as my loyal Behind the Beard readers, I wanted to launch it early to you (thank me later)!
BeardyBrew is our signature Maui-blend coffee, created with the highest quality, sustainably-sourced beans and delivered to your door monthly. I partnered with my buddy Yeshua who is a sommelier (aka serious wine guy) and a chef here in Maui - so you know this coffee is the real deal! As I always say, how you do anything is how you do everything so my goal is to bring the highest quality coffee right to your door every month. The best part is 100% of BeardyBrew profits will be donated Village of Hope Maui which supports the local foster care community here on Maui. I haven’t launched this to my full audience yet so you will be the first BeardyBrew customers! Check it out and order it here.
Something I Can Answer:
Each week, I'll be answering one question from someone on my BehindTheBeard Text List! Want your question answered? Submit it by simply replying to this text!
Question: “How does being a Christian affect the way you conduct business?”
First, I recognize that wealth can be dangerous. I compare it to alcohol - it can make for a fun time, but can also lead to bad consequences. BUT - I also remind myself (and others) of this: if you're reading this on a smartphone or computer, you're likely in the top 1% of the wealthiest people who ever lived. We are all richer than the richest person in Jesus' time. So when Jesus talks about rich people...he's not talking about Gates and Musk. He's talking about ALL of us. So, whether I make $50k a year or $5,000,000 a year... it's the same "rich." I am the "rich young ruler" (Google that if you don't know the story). Second, I try to do business in a way that everyone - even my tenants - feel good about. For example, I wouldn't buy a mobile home park and jack the rent on tenants by 200% just because I could. Third, I believe some people have the gift of making money (which I do) and God has blessed me in that. BUT it's for a reason: to give it away. Not to hoard it. So my life's plan in a nutshell: Earn Big. Give Hard. Die Broke. And finally, I believe wealth is a heart-issue. And that's an ongoing analysis - you have to ask yourself “where is my heart?”. Am I letting greed or fear guide my actions? And do I have people in my life that can make sure I don't fall into the traps of wealth? (I think I'm going to write a book on this someday!)
